Nell’aprile 1963 iniziava la Campagna di Birmingham.
Birmingham (Alabama) era all’epoca la città più segregazionista d’America e il Movimento per i Diritti Civili degli Afro-Americani decise che fosse il luogo giusto per un’iniziativa nonviolenta tesa ad accelerare il processo che avrebbe posto fine della segregazione razziale.
L’obiettivo era la desegregazione dei commercianti del centro di Birmingham, ma la campagna, pur utilizzando esclusivamente metodi nonviolenti di confronto, dovette scontrarsi con la brutale repressione delle autorità locali, guidate dal commissario Eugene “Bull” Connor.
Il sostegno dei leader della comunità ebraica e delle chiese cristiane fu piuttosto tiepido. Le autorità religiose anzi criticarono duramente M.L.King, invitandolo a fermare la protesta.
Rinchiuso nel carcere di Birmingham, Martin Luther King scrisse una lunga lettera provando a spiegare le ragioni della protesta e la necessità di continuarla.
🇬🇧 In April 1963 the Birmingham Campaign began.
Birmingham (Alabama) was at that time the most segregationist city in America and the African-American Civil Rights Movement decided it was the right place for a non-violent initiative aimed at accelerating the process that would end racial segregation.
The goal was the desegregation of the merchants of downtown Birmingham, but the campaign, while using only nonviolent methods of confrontation, had to clash with the brutal repression of the local authorities, led by Commissioner Eugene “Bull” Connor.
The support of the Jewish community leaders and Christian churches was rather lukewarm. Religious authorities even harshly criticized M.L.King and urged him to stop the protest.
Imprisoned in the Birmingham jail, Martin Luther King wrote a long letter trying to explain the reasons for the protest and the need to continue it.
